Conservation

The Hughes family recognizes the necessity to conserve and maintain the resources which make up the land and as such are sympathetic to the concerns and legal rights of landowners. One property in particular located in Oldham County, Texas containing 71,000 acres is a portion of the famed XIT and Matador Ranch. This ranch encompasses approximately 31 miles of the Canadian River and is under a Federal Conservation Easement which protects an abundance of wildlife and their habitat for future generations. This conservation easement as a land protection tool was created to encourage private landowners to conserve natural, open relatively undeveloped private lands that possess key natural resource values and to protect the “natural, scenic open space, historical, cultural and educational values” of the property. The permanent protection of these key natural resources is deemed to be in the overall public interest of the United States and the State of Texas. This understanding of being “Stewards of the Land” drives the exploration and production operations, and allows for a unique and thoughtful relationship with all parties involved and have strongly contributed to the success of the company.
